Seven Chair by Fritz Hansen of Denmark achieves court recognition as a widely recognised Trademark

Fritz Hansen A/S (Fritz Hansen), founded in Denmark in 1872, is one of the world's leading sellers and manufacturers of exclusive furniture and lighting products. Fritz Hansen operates a collection of showrooms around the world, including in Copenhagen, San Francisco, Milan, Tokyo, and New York, through which Fritz Hansen sells products with various distinctive and iconic designs, including Fritz Hansen Chairs.

The Series 7™ design was created in 1955, designed by Arne Jacobsen, and is the most popular chair sold by Fritz Hansen. The comparison between Fritz Hansen Series 7™ and its counterfeit is shown below:

Fritz Hansen recently filed a criminal complaint for violation of the Unfair Competition Prevention Act (UCPA) against a business, a popular furniture online store, selling counterfeit Series 7™ chairs in South Korea, under the name Seven Chair. The Seoul Eastern District Court ruled that the Series 7™ chair is indeed called a Seven Chair because its back resembles the shape of the Arabic number 7. In Korea, the Seven chair is widely recognized as a mark indicating chair designs by Fritz Hansen. The court ruled in favour of Fritz Hansen A/S and found the defendant guilty of copying the iconic mark, causing confusion with Fritz Hansen's products, and violating the UCPA.

In representing Fritz Hansen in this case, Y.S. Chang & Associates Litigation Practice provided extensive international and domestic evidence proving the Seven Chair name had become widely known, which led to securing a favorable judgment for Fritz Hansen under the UCPA.
